Quitting porn: why willpower fails and friction works

The relapse almost never happens during the resolution. It happens during a fifteen-second gap that friction could have filled.

This is the habit people are least willing to discuss and most likely to fight alone, which is exactly why it wins so consistently. Nothing here is moralising. It is mechanics.

> The relapse has a shape

Almost nobody relapses while feeling strong. The sequence is nearly always the same: a trigger state — stress, boredom, rejection, exhaustion — then a short window of access, then a decision made in under fifteen seconds, then the story afterwards about why it happened. Willpower interventions target the story. Friction targets the window.

> Novelty is the drug, not the content

The escalation people describe — needing more extreme material, longer sessions, more tabs — is a novelty-seeking loop, not a taste. It is the same machinery that makes an infinite feed compelling, running on stronger fuel. Which is good news: the same countermeasures apply.

You do not need to be stronger than the urge. You need to be somewhere the urge cannot be acted on for ten minutes.

> Friction that actually holds

  • Block at the category level, not by domain. Manual blocklists lose to a new tab every time.
  • Make the unlock slow and social. A key held by someone else converts a private fifteen-second decision into a public one.
  • Cover the trigger states directly: sleep, food, exercise, and one honest conversation a week do more than any blocker.
  • Plan the relapse response in advance. A slip that ends the whole attempt costs more than the slip.

> On shame

Shame is a bad engine. It produces one intense burst of resolve, then collapses into the exact emotional state that starts the loop again. Treat this as a boring engineering problem with an unglamorous solution — reduce access, increase daylight, repeat — and the emotional weight drops away over a few weeks.

Most people who succeed do not report a dramatic turning point. They report that after a few locked weeks the thing simply stopped being the first place their hand went.
