How to block Instagram on iPhone without deleting your account

Three ways to make Instagram unreachable on your phone while keeping the account, the DMs and the follower list intact.

Deleting Instagram is a big, dramatic move that most people undo within a fortnight, usually because of DMs or an event they were organising. Blocking it is smaller, reversible on a schedule, and far more likely to stick.

> Option 1: App Limit

Settings, Screen Time, App Limits, Add Limit, Social, select Instagram, set one minute. The app stays installed, the account stays live, the icon goes grey. Lock Screen Time with a passcode you do not choose, otherwise Ignore Limit turns this into theatre.

> Option 2: Downtime for the hours that matter

If the problem is specific — the first hour of the morning, everything after 10 p.m. — use Screen Time, Downtime and set the window. Add Instagram to the blocked list under App Limits rather than Always Allowed. This keeps the app usable for the twenty minutes a week you genuinely want it.

> Option 3: block the web version too

Blocking the app and leaving instagram.com open is the most common mistake in this whole category. Under Content Restrictions, Web Content, add instagram.com to Never Allow. Do the same for any other site you are trying to step away from.

> Keep the account alive while you are away

  • ▪Turn off every Instagram notification before blocking, so nothing pulls at you from the lock screen.
  • ▪Post a story saying DMs are slow this month if people rely on reaching you there.
  • ▪Log in from a laptop once a week if you need to check messages — desktop use is bounded by nature in a way phone use is not.
You are not quitting Instagram. You are removing it from your pocket, which is where it does ninety-five per cent of its damage.

> Why the first two options usually fail

They fail on the passcode. Screen Time asks you to set the code, so the block is enforced by the person it is blocking. Hand the code to someone else, or use a lock with a duration that cannot be shortened from the phone. Pick Instagram, pick a fortnight, hand over the key, and the decision holds until the timer ends.

// faq

> Can I block Instagram without deleting my account?
Yes. App Limits, Downtime and a Never Allow entry for instagram.com make it unreachable on the phone while the account stays active.
> Why can I still open Instagram in Safari?
App Limits only cover the app. Add instagram.com to Never Allow under Web Content to block the browser version.
